"The Great Wall" is a 2016 fantasy action film directed by Zhang Yimou and starring Matt Damon, Jing Tian, Pedro Pascal, and Willem Dafoe. The movie combines elements of historical fiction, fantasy, and monster genres.
The story is set in ancient China during the Song dynasty. William (played by Matt Damon) and Tovar (played by Pedro Pascal) are two mercenaries from Europe who are searching for a legendary substance called "black powder." While fleeing from a group of bandits, they stumble upon the Great Wall of China.
They soon discover that the wall is not only a defensive structure against invading armies but also serves as a barrier against hordes of mythical creatures called Tao Tei. These creatures, resembling monstrous reptiles, emerge periodically from the mountains in search of food. The Chinese army, known as the Nameless Order, has been tasked with defending the wall and protecting China from the Tao Tei.
William and Tovar are initially taken captive by the Nameless Order but eventually earn their trust by demonstrating their combat skills. They join forces with the Chinese soldiers to combat the Tao Tei, using various weapons and strategies. William becomes particularly close to Commander Lin Mae (played by Jing Tian) and develops a romantic connection with her.
As the battles against the Tao Tei escalate, William and Tovar learn about the true nature of the creatures and the purpose of the black powder they sought. They discover that the black powder is used by the Chinese to create explosives to defeat the Tao Tei. However, they also learn that the Tao Tei have a queen who controls them and is drawn to the black powder's magnetic properties.
In a climactic battle, the Nameless Order manages to kill the Tao Tei queen, ending the threat posed by the creatures. William decides to remain in China and help defend the wall against any future threats, while Tovar leaves with a sample of the black powder.
"The Great Wall" combines historical elements, such as the construction and defense of the Great Wall of China, with fantastical elements like mythical creatures. It explores themes of bravery, sacrifice, and cultural exchange as characters from different backgrounds unite to protect a common cause.
